Drawing lilies in a mixed technique: using pencils and watercolors

The world of flower tattoos is very diverse. Each master tries to create individual works with lilies, which are not similar to others. Let's learn all about the meanings and styles of tattoos with the image of a lily for guys and girls.

Meaning of lily tattoo

In many girls, the tattoo with the image of a lily is popular, but not everyone learns about its meaning before transferring the sketch to the body. This tattoo carries a rich subtext, and has an interesting meaning. In different cultures and peoples, the image of the lily has its own meaning and significance. For example, in ancient Egypt, the lily was a symbol of fertility and nobility. Ancient Rome and Crete compared the lily to nobility. And the French in olden times perceived this image solely as an attribute of royal families. The tattoo of the lily changes its meaning depending on the color scheme and the concept of the figure.

The structure of the flower

To create a good drawing - it is important to have before your eyes a sample of what you're going to draw. If looking at a live bouquet of lilies is not possible, look for photographs. Take a good look at them, and then get to work.

How to draw a blooming iris

At the end of the lesson, you'll have a drawing like this:

Let's place the stems and flowers

In order to properly draw this delicate plant, let's understand its structure. The lily has two rows of petals. The upper leaf overlaps the two petals of the lower row. There are usually six leaves. In the diagram, the leaves of the upper and lower rows are marked in different colors: blue and red. The leaves in each of the rows are placed at an angle of 160 degrees.

The initial step is simple, but very important. Try to place the flowers so that they look good on the leaf. Floral compositions come in many varieties, but if you are just learning - it is better to place the main objects in the center.

Do not draw straight, as a ruler of stems - at least a little, slightly curve the line of the stem. All the flowers should be different from each other - looking in different directions.

At this stage, we do a sketch very lightly, barely touching the paper. We use a hard pencil.

The shape of the petals

This drawing shows what shape the lily petals usually have. They look a bit like a rhombus with rounded edges. Pay attention to the shape the petal takes as it curves from different angles. Practice on another sheet of paper.

Sketch the shape of the leaves of the flower.

Draw the flowers and stems

When our light sketch is good enough, everything is correct and harmonious, you can draw the contours of the flowers and stems more clearly. The stems of the lily have a certain thickness, show this in your sketch.

Drawing the buds and leaves

There may be several flowers on a single plant stem at the same time. You can show a flower with several buds at this stage, or add several new buds on one of the stems with the flower. Lily buds are large almost like the flower itself, shaped like an elongated oval or a drop.

The green leaves on the stem are usually small, oblong, oval. Notice how the leaves are placed in relation to each other.

Drawing and adding detail

Lilies have strongly pronounced beautiful stamens. We will draw them last. The stamens make our flowers look immediately recognizable.

The light sketch is ready, now we can draw everything more accurately and boldly. Soft pencil to clarify the shape of flowers, leaves, stems and buds.

At the final stage of the stroke add shadows. Slightly darken the stems and green leaves. If you drew on colored paper, white pastel can slightly indicate the delicacy of the flowers. The drawing on the white sheet can be enlivened with light strokes with colored pencils of any suitable color.

Whichever area you choose, it is worth noting that large lilies look the most impressive. In order to fill as much space on the body as possible, girls apply tattoos to the forearm, shoulder, side, ankle, abdomen and back. It is worth noting the fact, where in the chronicle of history lilies on the shoulder were stuffed girls of easy command. But nowadays this tradition has absolutely lost its relevance. Fashionable and modern individuals quite calmly wear such a tattoo in any area of his body. Among the male sex, the tattoo of the lily is rare, but if it occurs, it is in the area of the chest, forearm and calf muscle.

Drawing lilies in a mixed technique: using pencils and watercolors

To draw a lily in mixed technique with watercolor pencils and watercolors, we need:

1. watercolor paper. I have a format A2 - 50x60cm. Any paper will do, as well as Watman (however, you'd better not get it wet when working with Watman).

A set of 12 colors is enough for watercolor pencils (Koh-i-noor, CretaColor, Faber-Castel). I never worked with local brands like Sonet, so I can't guarantee their quality and chromaticity.)

Watercolor St.-Petersburg (Belye Nochi, Nevstkaya Palitra).

4. Brushes #2, 5, 9 rounds of column or squirrel hair, and a bristle brush to make a splash.

So, let's get started!

First step.

With a blue or black watercolor pencil, we apply the outline of the colors. Don't be afraid of the color, because when blurred with a wet brush, it will give us the nice shade we need. :)

On the petals with blue, blue, purple we sketch a light shadow.

And on the unopened buds make the shadows slightly greenish.

Stems and leaves are drawn in brown, green and yellow, identifying for yourself, where in your work will fall light (in my work from the upper left corner).

Second step.

Let's leave our flowers for a while. :) Now let's work on the background.

First, we wet the sheet with a clean brush, leaving our flowers dry. When the paper is wet, you can begin to fill the background with color. We need to work fast to keep the paper from drying out, and we can achieve smooth transitions from color to color.

We work with watercolor from light to dark. At first we sketch the general tone of background quite quickly, using blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine, turquoise, azure blue. Let the paint flow!

Then darken the background around the flowers with indigo, indarend blue, purple, and neutral black.

The paint should still be flowing. If your paper is already dry, moisten it gently again.

If you get dry harsh edges in the background, that's easy to fix! All you have to do is go over the border between colors with a wet, clean brush and you'll see it soften!

This is what we got at this stage!

Third step.

When the background is dry, we again take up flowers. Flowers we have white, so we will not paint over them. It will be quite enough the color we drew with watercolor caradashes.

To achieve the effect of watercolor and to smooth out the pencil shading, we take a clean brush and blur the pencil, leaving the lightest parts of the petals untouched.

A brush with a reservoir is the best way to work! But if you don't have one, you can use a regular brush. But make sure that it stays clean!

If you don't think the flowers are expressive enough, you can enhance the shadows with watercolor.

It remains to work out the center of the buds. Apply ultramarine shadows (80%) + sienna + kraplak. We make bright accents in red. To liven up the flowers, in conclusion we make red splashes with a bristle brush in the central part of the bud.

That's it!

But I couldn't stop there, and splattered the background, carefully covering the flowers with scraps of paper :)

Let's see!

Our lilies are ready! Have a lot of creative success and inspiration!
