Maradona = style. Dressed flamboyantly, got tattoos with Che Guevara and Fidel, photographed with Queen, shot for slum magazine

Stylish stories from Diego's life.

Diego Maradona was a bright personality: he loved parties, wore earrings, smoked cigars, danced incendiary and had a powerful charisma.

Maradona is also one of the symbols of soccer fashion of 80-90s. Back then the players played in short shorts, and on the field they were allowed to wear jewelry. Diego scored his legendary goal against England in the World Cup 1986 with short shorts, an earring in his ear, a ring on his finger and a bright bracelet on his left hand. God's hand.

Maradona's greatness goes far beyond soccer and has inspired, for example, fashion designers. In 2021 Italian luxury brand Dolce&Gabbana included in its collection a light blue silk Napoli T-shirt with number 10 and the inscription "Maradona" on the back. True, D&G used his name without asking, because of which Diego sued the brand for 70 thousand euros.

Maradona himself enjoyed going beyond sports - from fashionable outfits to photos with the band Queen and friendship with Fidel Castro.

Unconventional clothes, loved Versace

Maradona liked bright clothes and looked stylish off the field: silk shirts, patterned suits, eye-catching T-shirts, jeans, leather jackets.

Of the brands Diego respected Versace, known for its bright prints and contrasting color combinations. Things of the Italian luxury brand he wore and after the end of his career.

Maradona also loved fur coats.

Tattoos with a portrait of Che Guevara

The meaning of the Che Guevara tattoo for those who know his history is crystal clear:

  • A rebellious spirit.. The tattoo with the portrait of the great revolutionary indicates that its owner does not intend to submit to circumstances, does not recognize anyone's power over himself, craves change and is ready for anything to achieve them.
  • The iron will. As is well known, even at his own execution, the Commandante bit his hand to keep from making a sound. His will was not broken even by fear of death.
  • Strong character .. Ernesto remained faithful to his ideals despite all he had endured. Even plagued by illness, he kept moving forward and encouraging others. A person who chooses a tattoo with his image wants to tell others about the strength of his character and the inviolability of principles.
  • Loyalty to the idea. After the successful revolution in Cuba, when times were relatively peaceful, Che Guevara was not interested in the opportunities for enrichment or other personal gain that opened up for him, because this was contrary to the principles of equality and justice in which he firmly believed.

He was photographed with Queen, announcing their song on stage

In the early 80′s Diego has not yet become an icon, but was popular and progressed powerfully, for example, won the World Cup with the youth team.

The British band Queen was on the wave of popularity at that time, they had already recorded mega hits like We Will Rock You and We Are The Champions. In 1981 Queen went on tour in Argentina (the only time when they were there with Mercury).

On the evening of March 8, during the final concert of the Argentine tour, Freddie said: "I'd like to introduce you and our friend Maradona."

The Argentine audience exploded as the soccer player took the stage. "I want to thank Freddy and Queen for making me so happy," Diego said into the microphone. Immediately after, he announced the next song, Another One Bites the Dust.

Before going onstage, the members of Queen and Maradona made a few photos backstage: Freddy - in a national team shirt of Argentina, and Diego - in a T-shirt with the flag of Great Britain.

What's Che famous for?

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna became not just a symbol of the Cuban Revolution but of revolutionary ideas in general. That is why he is so popular among young people who are no stranger to the spirit of rebellion.

The nickname "Che" Ernesto awarded himself to emphasize his Argentine origin, as this interjection was often used as an address in Argentina.

The future revolutionary was well educated and broad-minded, because from an early age his parents instilled in him a love of books and encouraged communication with people from different social classes and different views. Classical and modern prose, poetry, philosophy, science, equestrianism, rugby, soccer - this is just a short list of the interests of young Ernesto. However, he still chose to become a doctor, which he eventually graduated from the University of Buenos Aires.

Che Guevara was also partial to travel, in which he explored life in South America. Already then he made friends with political activists and himself began to take part in social activities, even managed to get on the list of particularly dangerous communists to be eliminated. It was on one of those trips that he became acquainted with the Cuban supporters of Fidel Castro. He ended up going to Cuba with them.

During the expedition, he was plagued by illness and his unit was thinning because of periodic armed skirmishes with government troops. But many Cubans supported revolutionary ideas and willingly joined the struggle. In the end, the rebels did overthrow the ruling regime.

Che did not see in the Cuban revolution the achievement of his goal, but only the beginning of a global social revolution on the continent. But he never fully embodied this idea: he was captured and shot in Bolivia.

Che Guevara became a symbol of the revolutionary struggle not only because of his merits, but also because of his sincere belief that he was fighting for a just cause. According to eyewitness accounts, even before his execution all his thoughts were occupied by this global idea.

The famous portrait that is still used today to print on T-shirts and patches was copied from a real photo of Che by the Irish artist Jim Fitzpatrick. The portrait became a real symbol of revolutionary romance, even though many people now consider it kitsch, which has lost its original meaning and has nothing to do with revolutionary ideas.

Photographed with his mouth open for a magazine about slums

There is an important magazine in Argentina, La Garganta Poderosa, which writes about the Villero. This is the name given to slum dwellers. These settlements are barns and shacks made of tin, wood, and other handicrafts.

The slums have high population densities, no sanitation, illegal electricity, and people barely make ends meet. Diego grew up in similar conditions: he lived in the poorest neighborhood, his family lived in a dilapidated house. The tin roof leaked when it rained, there was no water in the house.

La Garganta Poderosa seeks to draw attention to the problem, to show the life of the Villeros in first person, for residents to share stories and pictures. All the issues have interviews with stars, in 2011 they invited Maradona. The trick of the magazine is that the man on the cover opens his mouth as if screaming. The aim is to attract the readers' attention.

After Maradona, other players were invited - Messi, Agüero, Osvaldo, Di Maria. "I will be a Villero all my life, because no one will take this city away from my head or heart. I, like you, dream of equality," Diego said.
